Welcome to the SAHS D.C. Ghettogether Reunion website. You have just set yourself up for a great experience! This website was put together in order to help SAHS "brats" around the glode reconnect. And, believe me, there's nothing like reconnecting with former friends and acquaintances from good o' SAHS!

Ghettogether History

Well, it all began in June 1996. It was a hot, steamy, and humid summer day when (don’t you just hate it when stories start like that) eight former SAHS classmates decided to get together at the Bolling Air Force Base, Washington, D.C., home of Speedy Sutton '82. Having kept in touch off and on over the years, the group spent the day talking about the good times they had "back in the day." Laughing until their stomach muscles hurt talking about subjects like "Senior Toga Day," basketball and football pep rallies, working at the R.B. PX or commissary, Coach Kugler, Coach Bernie O'Neil, Coach Parker, Ms. Westenfelder's BIG HAIR, and much more!

Enjoying themselves so much, the group decided they would continue to have their gathering, year after year, but they would push to contact as many other SAHS alumni they could who graduated in the 80s and 90s, and who also lived in the Washington, D.C., area. They made this decision not knowing that the SAHS Alumni Association All-Year Reunion would take place in their very own backyard (D.C.) that same year.

In 2001, Martina Raymer Boone '87 came on aboard with her suggestion to invite SAHS alumni from around the country. With an almost "Field of Dreams" mentality, she promised, "I'm sure they'll come." And she was right; Ghettogether 2001 welcomed 38 alumni who traveled from as far away as Texas and California. And, as they say in the movies, the rest is history!

Oh! You asked how the reunion nickname came about? Well, we'll be happy to 'splain it to you. Like it was mentioned previously, the group gathered at the on-base house of Speedy, which at the time was pushing 40+ years old, but was due to be torn down to make room for newer units. Simply put, the area resembled an inner-city "ghetto." As previously mentioned, the group planned to continue having their "get togethers" and a simple play on words gave us the birth of the "SAHS D.C. Ghettogether Reunion." Finally, it's pronounced, "Geh-toe-gether", not "Ghetto-together".

What Happen at Ghettogether 2002

Simply put, Ghettogether 2002 was huge! More than 60 SAHS alumni attended the two-day event and came from all over the U.S. -- California, Washington, Oregon, Texas, Colorado, Georgia, Florida, Nevada, North Carolina, New York, Connecticut, Indiana, Kentucky, Alabama, Pennsylvania, Missouri, Michigan, Maryland, Virginia and the District.

The weekend started with a group of alumni going to Champs Restaraunt for dinner. Then, in typical Stuttgart fashion, Juliana Laub Hill, Nickie Langland, and Mary-Jean Zampino (all c/o '82 grads) led the group back to the hotel (Doubletree Crystal City, Va.) and took over one of the hotel bars for an evening social.

Saturday brought the reunion picnic, and that's when the fun really began. "Old" faces arrived by the minute to be greeted by other, familiar "old" faces. After a "brief" welcome speech by Speedy Sutton '82, the festivities began with the inaugural playing of the SAHS D.C. Ghettogether Kickball game (yes, kickball!), as well as volleyball, horseshoes, and basketball games.

After stuffing our faces and reminiscing about them good o' days, everyone broke for awhile in order to get ready for the evening social back at the hotel. The fun during the picnic was great, but the evening social was even better. The ballroom overlooked the D.C. "skyline", and thanks to all the ladies, things got going the minute the music began to play. You know, some things never change do they? The ladies were the first to hit the dance floor and kept it going all night and into the early morning. What happen at the "after-party"? Well, lets just say that some things are best kept a unspoken ... for memories sake of course. Better yet, you can ask Rick Ray '84 for the details yourself.
